What is ‘Bleeding a Radiator’?
Bleeding a radiator means releasing trapped air within the system. The air prevents hot water from circulating properly, which leads to uneven heating, cold spots and a boiler working harder than it should.
Why is Bleeding Radiators Important?
Improves Heating Efficiency
Air pockets in your radiators can prevent them from heating fully, so you are not getting the warmth you are paying for. By bleeding the radiator, you allow the hot water to flow freely through the entire system.
Reduces Energy Bills
When radiators aren’t working efficiently, your boiler works harder to reach the desired temperature. This uses more energy. Bleeding your radiators helps your system perform at its best, which can save you money on heating bills.
Extends the Lifespan of Your Heating System
Over time, trapped air can lead to corrosion and sludge build up. Regularly bleeding your radiators helps to keep the system clean and prevent costly breakdowns in the future.

How to Tell if Your Radiators Need Bleeding
There are several common signs that means you need to bleed your radiators:
Radiators are cold at the top and hot at the bottom
You hear gurgling noises when the heating is on
It takes longer than usual to warm up your rooms
Tools Needed to Bleed Your Radiators
To bleed your radiators, you will need:
Radiator key: This is a tool designed to fit into the bleed valve, allowing you to open it easily.
Cloth: Use this to catch any water that sprays during the bleeding.
Small tub: Place this under the radiator to catch excess water.
1. Turn off Your Heating
Switch off your central heating and let the radiators cool. This ensures safety and prevents hot water from spraying.

2. Identify the Radiator Bleed Valve
Find the valve on your radiator. It is often at the top on one side and resembles a square or hexagonal nut.
3. Insert the Radiator Key
Insert the key and turn it anti-clockwise. You should hear a hissing sound as the air escapes.
4. Check for Drips
After bleeding, inspect the valve for any signs of drippage. If you notice any, gently tighten the valve until the drip stops. Be careful not to over-tighten.
5. Check your Boiler Pressure
Bleeding your radiators can cause your boiler pressure to drop. Once you have finished, check the pressure gauge. If it is too low, you may need to top it up. Please refer to your boiler manual.
6. Turn Your Heating Back On
Once you have bled the radiators, turn your heating back on and check for even heat distribution.
